Middlesex Community College is excited to announce Sheldon Maloney as the new Campus Resource Officer. A police officer for the Bedford Police Department (BPD), Officer Maloney joined the college after MCC’s previous officer retired. His goal is to continue making Middlesex a safe and welcoming place.

“I have always believed in community and by working in a college setting, I can meet more people,” Officer Maloney said. “Once I saw how the two officers before me, Officer French and Sergeant Naylor, helped and interacted with everyone at Middlesex, I believed this role was a great opportunity.”

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Officer Maloney was inspired to join law enforcement at a young age. He gained interest in the field when he saw a local police officer’s positive effects on the community. Once he moved to the United States and graduated from Bedford High School, he became a police officer for the BPD and has served in the position for 17 years.

Officer Maloney was happy to help the close-knit community of Bedford – many of whom feel like family to him. In his role at MCC, he plans to take a similar approach by being a positive influence and interacting with students, employees and community members across the college.

“I enjoy socializing with everyone on each campus. That is one of the biggest benefits of my role. I want people to feel comfortable around a police officer. I am like an open book." - Sheldon Maloney, MCC Campus Resource Officer

Since joining MCC in the Fall of 2024, Officer Maloney spoke with students who are interested in law enforcement and participated in a Coffee with a Cop event. In addition, he visited one of Professor Kenneth Lavallee’s criminal and social justice classes to offer advice and discuss the profession.

“It is a good and humbling feeling to speak with the students,” Officer Maloney said. “Telling and showing them what the job is about has been rewarding. I am always open to having students join me for a ride-along during one of my work shifts. If they really want to learn about the experience, I am willing to help.”

As part of his role, Officer Maloney also communicates with MCC’s Institutional Safety Officers to provide a secure environment for the campuses. He is active in both Bedford and Lowell throughout the week to maintain a friendly and engaging presence around campus.

Outside of Middlesex, Officer Maloney practices woodworking. He makes projects such as benches, cutting boards, flags and tables. He began the hobby five years ago and has not stopped or slowed down since, often sharing his passion with community members around MCC.

For the upcoming Spring semester, Officer Maloney looks forward to further engaging in the community at MCC’s activities, events and everyday campus life. Building and honing a good relationship with the community is one of his priorities in his job.

“I am an honest person who believes in law and order,” Officer Maloney said. “On the other hand, I am a big people person. When some people are near police officers, they feel uneasy. I want to help change their views on us by talking to them and forming connections. There are many people I have bonded with already.”
